The Idea Behind why the Juice Diet is so Beneficial

Green juice requires hardly any digestion, so all it’s nutrients gets rapidly absorbed into your system and gives your digestive system a ‘rest’

Common Fasting Practices

Fasting was a part of life during ancesterol times because of periods of starvation

Fasting methods (which can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks) has been used by many practitioners as a way to ‘give the body a break’ from digesting food. It is commonly used because it is seen as a natural process that facilitates healthy body functioning and weight maintenance

Fasting has been used in many ways, such as involving:

    • week long retreats or traveling to stay at a spa-resort
    • using enemas or laxatives during the fasting period to get rid of waste from the colon.

Alternatively, people may take psyllium husks with the juice to replace the lack of fiber in their diet. Psyllium creates bulk necessary for healthy bowel movements

Is Fasting a Good Idea?

When fasting, one should take care about the way they do it. If you are abstaining from food for more than 2 days you are starving, not fasting

The Fasting State

Fasting is the abstinence from food for 18-48 hours

During this time 3 things occur:

1. All of the stored glycogen (which is carbohydrate that has been stored in the muscles & liver) is depleted and another source of energy is needed for the body to run on (glycogen stores are used up in about 24 hours)

2. To provide fuel for the body, muscle proteins are broken down to synthesize glucose in the liver – a process called ‘gluconeogenesis’ generates glucose from non-carbohydrate sources, which includes some of these muscle proteins

2. Fats stores become the main suppliers of energy. Energy production occurs by lipolysis (break down of lipids and stored body fat in to fatty acids)

The Starvation State

Starvation is the abstinence of food for more than 48 hours

Starvation is the most extreme form of malnutrition. You are essentially starving your body of essential nutrients if you abstain from food (or entire food groups) for more than 2 days

During this time 3 things occur:

1. The main source of energy become stored fat (The more fat someone has, the longer they can survive)

2. Your body enters a a state of ‘ketosis’ (large quantities of acetone are excreted in urine). Ketones are usually used to supply the brain with energy

3. After prolonged starvation, the body breaks down all of the remaining muscle proteins to synthesize glucose

Juicing involves the removal of pulp and nutrient rich skins from fruits and vegetables

As a result, juicing removes most of the fiber, vitamins and minerals. Relying on juicing for adequate nutrition is not a good idea

Downsides of Juicing
  • Low intake protein  – not supplying the body with essential amino acids
  • Low intake of healthy fats – not supplying the body with essential fatty acids
  • Low fiber intake – makes it hard to feel full & satiated
  • Deprive the body of other essential nutrients – can lead to nutrient deficiencies

These nutrients are essential because they need to be provided through the diet – our bodies cannot produce them. Therefore, you can easily become deficient in these essential nutrients when limiting certain foods or entire Food Groups

Why Juicing is both Benefical & Detrimental for Weight Loss

Doing a juice fast for more than 2 days can cause muscle loss, a decreased metabolism and the weight to be gained back once the fasting period has ended. The reasons why this method of weight loss (crash dieting) is unsafe and unhealthy is outlined in This Post. However, including juices (with the pulp) as part of an overall, healthy and balanced diet provides many health benefits and can definitely help you lose weight.

Bottom Line

Juice fasting has both benefits and pitfalls, depending on the duration and method used

Disadvantages of Juice Fasting

Fasting for more than 2 days puts your body in starvation mode and can deplete your body of necessary nutrients needed for everyday bodily functions. If your body is not getting the correct nutrition for carrying out basic processes, it can potentially be dangerous and cause serious health problems. Another downside is that weight is very likely to be regained on an exclusive juice diet because you are only really losing water weight. Also it is very difficult to stick to a diet that restrictive, so is not likely to be sustained in the long term

Advantages of Juice Fasting

Including a juice in your diet every now and then has many health benefits, and can be good for weight loss and weight management. Fresh fruit & vegetable juices (with the pulp) can provide a host of vitamins, minerals & antioxidants that should be included in a healthy diet. In Summary,

Fasting and juice diets need to be used with caution. Fasting for a too long period of time can cause nutrient deficiencies, unhealthy weight loss and other serious consequences. One example is that only eating fruit and vegetables for too long can result in a sodium deficiency, which can lead to headaches, light-headedness, weakness and nausea. When doing any sort of fast, be sure that you are not doing it for more than 2 days and take care about the amount of nutrients you are getting. Limiting entire nutrient groups from your diet (eg. healthy fats or protein) is unwise and can lead to health problems down the line
